Celebrating the best in Irish Horticulture
This post was meant to appear weeks ago so it may seem very strange to be talking about an event that happened awhile ago now. I had wrote it and planned for it to come out a few days later but unfortunately I fell victim to modern technology and never clicked the schedule button once I finished with it! It was only when I was looking over draft blog posts I have that I noticed it sitting there longing to be published!
At the end of March I got invited to celebrate the best that Ireland has to offer in the world of horticulture. Ireland may be small in comparison to other markets but we are known for our top quality plants and world class standards. This is exactly what the Bord Bia annual Amenity Horticulture Awards acknowledge each year and this year the standards were higher than ever.
At the awards lunch in Bord Bia’s HQ in Dublin 28 garden centres,3 ornamental growers and 16 landscape service providers were highlighted for achieving the standards set out by Bord Bia’s Quality Assurance Programmes.
At the awards there were four overall winners who really showcased the best of the best in their individual categories. Large Garden Centre of the Year went to The Arboretum Lifestyle & Garden Centre, Co. Carlow. Small Garden Centre of the Year was awarded to Cois na hAbhann, Garden, Home & Lifestyle Centre, Co. Wexford. Landscape Business of the Year was won by Sligo based Thomas J. Crummy Landscaping and Ornamental Grower of the Year went to Young Nurseries, Co. Limerick.
It was great to be part of the celebration acknowledging Ireland’s great horticulture industry and the Bord Bia Amenity Horticulture Awards is really the first of many events this year celebrating horticulture. First up on the calendar of events is Bloom in the Park which will take place in the Phoenix Park over the June bank holiday weekend. The Dublin Garden Festival is taking place at Christ Church Cathedral from 13th – 15th June. Then in August The International Garden Centre World Congress will be held in Ireland.
I for one can’t wait for the exciting summer and year ahead as there will be so much going on in Ireland that is garden and horticulture based. It is a treat for plant lovers like myself to have so much happening on our own doorstep!
